RAWDON BRIGGS (1825-1877) AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Rawdon BRIGGS

Rawdon Briggs(1007) was the first child and only son of only three children of Rawdon Briggs (210) and Matilda Greenwood(202). According to the IGI, using church registers, this Rawdon was born on 11 May 1825, and baptised on 19 Jul 1826 at the Northgate End Presbyterian Church in Halifax. He was a JP for the West Riding of YOrkshire.

Again according to the IGI, and also the pedigree drawn up by the late Noel Currer-Briggs drawing both on the pedigree by Foster, on 27 Oct 1852 Rawdon Briggs married Louisa Barff(1010), daughter of Thomas Barff of Cliff Field, near Wakefield and his wife Eliza, the daughter of Thomas Tootall of Brierley Hall, Chevet, also near Wakefield. The marriage took place at St. John's church, Wakefield. According to Foster (1874), reiterated in the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, Rawdon and Louisa had eight children.

Children of Rawdon Briggs(1007) and Louisa Barff(1010)

Name Notes
Rev. Canon Rawdon Briggs(1011) Born, according to Foster(1874), on 30 Dec 1853 and baptised at Warkworth on 30 Jan 1854. The 1861 census, when he was at Birstwith Hall, lists his place of birth as Eastfield, Northumberland, which is where his parents lived before settling down at Birstwith Hall. Warkworth is a small town surrounded on three sides by the River Coquet, not far from the mouth of that river. Who Was Who, 1929-1940, says he was educated at Winchester and St. John's College, Oxford. According to Alumni Oxoniensis (1715-1886) he matriculated on 25 Jan 1873. He took his BA in 1877 and MA in 1880. He took Holy Orders, being ordained Deacon in 1877 and Priest in 1878. He was the Vicar of All Saints, Bradford from 1882 to 1915, and in both the 1891 and 1901 census returns he is living at the All Saints Vicarage, Horton Green, Horton, near Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire, with a cook/housekeeper and a maid. From 1915 to 1925 he was Vicar of Clapham, Yorkshire, where William Currer(266) was Vicar in earlier years. According to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, Rawdon died unmarried, and the date of his death is given in Who Was Who as 21 Aug 1936. His death was registered in the Sep quarter of 1936 at Bedford (vol.3b, p.267). He was 82. His address is given in Who Was Who as 11A St. Minver Road, Bedford, and I presume this is where he stayed when he retired.
Frederick Barff Briggs(1012) According to the IGI, based on church records, he was born on 25 Feb 1855 and baptised at Warkworth church on 29 Mar 1855. According to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, Frederick served in the Soudan Campaign, Yorkes regiment, and died, unmarried, in 1885, aged 30. Whether this means he died in the Sudan during one of the campaigns I do not know. But his death is registered in the GRO Army Deaths Index for Egypt station in 1885 (page 1065).
Henry Edwin Briggs(1013) Born on 28 Dec 1856, at Eastfield, Warkworth, Northumberland. His birth was registered at Alnwick, in the Mar quarter of 1857 (vol.10b, p.249). In 1891 he married Georgina Martha TUNNARD(1013), the marriage being registered at Boston, Lincs., in the Jun quarter of 1891 (vol.7a, p.748). They had two sons, both born in Pipestone, Minnesota, USA according to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, before Henry's early death in 1895. Further information on these sons, who both became distinguished military men, will be found in the separate page on Henry Briggs and his descendants.
Louisa Matilda Briggs(1014) Born 1858 and her birth registered at Alnwick in the Dec quarter of that year (vol.1ob, p.244), so presumably she was also born at Eastfield. She married Edward Anthony CASS(1022), probably the son of William Anthony Cass, Vicar of Burford, Oxon., and his wife Maud(?). The marriage of Louisa and Edward was registered in Bedford in the Sep quarter of 1894 (vol.3b, p.618). They had at least one child, Lilian Brenda CASS(1023), who, according to the 1901 England census, was born in Pipestone, Minnesota, USA, which seems to have been a bit of a Briggs colony at one stage as her two cousins were also born there. Her date of birth is given in the GRO index entry for her death as 30 Jun 1895. Lilian died in Nov 1985, presumably unmarried. According to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, Louise Matilda died in 1918, I do not know where.
Alice Maude Mary Briggs(1015) Born 1860 and died in 1924.
William Currer Briggs(1016) Born 1861 and baptised at Birstwith church. Married Laura Carey(1030) in 1889, and had three children. Went to the USA as a banker, is said not to have been successful. Died in 1927. More details can be found on his separate page.
Rev. Arthur Charlesworth Briggs(1017) Born 1867 and died about 1947.
Harold Stansfield Briggs(1018) Born 1869. Died in 1891 in Minnesota, USA.
