William Briggs(203) was the second son of Rawdon Briggs and Ann Currer and so an elder brother of my great-great-grandfather Henry Briggs(5). William was born on 30 May 1794, and baptised on 21 Jul 1794 at the Northgate End Presbyterian Church in Halifax. On 20 Jul 1836 he married Mary Frances Robinson(204), daughter of John Briggs Robinson of Leicester. According to the IGI the marriage took place at Glenfield, Leicester. My Bartholemews gazetteer says Glenfield is a parish about 4.5 km NW of Leicester. Foster's (1874) Currer/Briggs pedigree says that William was a banker, was in the commission of the peace for the West Riding of Yorkshire, and for the county of Lancaster. According to Foster (1874), William and Mary had seven children.
|Eliza Catherine Briggs(394)||IGI says born ca.1837. Died in infancy according to Foster (1874)|
|Frances Charlotte Briggs(395)||Some IGI entries indicate her birth ca.1839, and an IGI entry based on Bishops Transcripts for Halifax Parish Church gives the date of her baptism as 12 May 1841. I have not found her in the GRO births index for the period from the beginning of records to the end of 1841. Her name is given in the Currer/Briggs pedigree by Foster (1874). Nothing else is known at present.|
|Ann Ellen Briggs(396)||IGI has her born about 1841 and, based on parish records from the Bishops Transcripts for Halifax Parish Church, baptised at Halifax on 15 Aug 1843. Her name is given in the Currer/Briggs pedigree by Foster (1874). Nothing else is known at present.|
|William Rawdon Briggs(397)||The IGI, based on records submitted by a member of the LDS church, has him born on 12 Apr 1844 at Kirkby Lees, Halifax, Yorks., and, based on parish records from the Bishops Transcripts for Halifax Parish Church, baptised at Halifax on 23 Aug 1844. Foster's (1874) Currer/Briggs pedigree indicates that he was resident in Canada, without giving further details.|
|Hugh Currer Briggs(398)||According to the IGI, using a record submited by a member of the LDS church, he was born on 26 May 1846 at Pentwyn House, Rockfield, Monmouth. The GRO births index has an entry for a Hugh Currer Briggs in the second quarter of 1846, in the district of Monmouth, vol. XXV!, p. 92. The IGI has two dates for his baptism: 13 Jun 1846 at Rockfield, Monmouth, based on parish records, and 25 Mar 1847 in the submission by a member of the LDS church. Foster's (1874) pedigree of the Currer and Briggs families gives the same birth date, and says that he was baptised at Rockfield and then received into the church at St. Thomas's, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Foster further says he was an MA of Worcester College, Oxford, and took Holy Orders.|
|Mary Catherine Briggs(399)||The IGI has her birth about 1849, based on a record submitted by a member of the LDS church, and says she was of Halifax, Yorks. There is a GRO births index entry for the first quarter of 1848 for a Mary Catherine Briggs registered on the Isle of Wight, vol. VIII, p. 245. The family seems to have spent time on the Isle of Wight, so this entry is probably the correct one. Foster (1874) gives her name only. Nothing else is known about her.|
|Henry Briggs(400)||The IGI, based on records submitted my members of the LDS church, has him born on 15 Oct 1853 at Halifax. There is a GRO births index entry in the fourth quarter of 1853 for a Henry Briggs, registered at Halifax, vol. 9a, p.350, which is probably him. The IGI indicates that he was baptised on 22 Dec 1853 and Foster (1874) says this was at St. James's. For further information see below.|
The fact that their children seem to have been baptised in Church of England churches suggests that William Briggs abandoned the dissenting church of his childhood. He stayed with the banking arm of the family. Foster (1874) records him as living at Underbank, Torquay, in Devon, so possibly he moved south when he retired.
According to the IGI Henry Briggs(400) was born on 15 Oct 1853 and baptised at St James, Halifax, Yorks. on 22 Dec 1853. According to information that I have received from Helen Briggs Holmes, on 02 Jun 1880 Henry Briggs married Inez Ellen Cornish at Honiton, Falmouth, Devon. There is a GRO marriage index entry for this marriage.
Subsequent generations leading to Helen Briggs Holmes are given in the table below.
|Henry Wynn Briggs(402)||Son of Henry Briggs(400), was born on 08 Apr 1881 at Weare Gifford in Devon. On 24 Aug 1903 at Falmouth, Devon, he married Susan Williams(403) (born 1884 at Falmouth, died 20 Sep 1949 in Manchester as Susan Fullwood, presumably having remarried). They had a son Frank Hugh Briggs (see below). Henry Wynn Briggs died on 06 Mar 1919 in Manchester.|
|Frank Hugh Briggs(404)||Son of Henry Wynn Briggs and Susan Williams, was born on 13 May 1911 in Manchester. He married Agnes Court(405) (born at Oldham, Lancs. on 08 Aug 1912, died on 02 Jun 1957 in Manchester) on 11 Aug 1934 at Cheadle, Manchester. They had a son Anthony Hugh Briggs (see below), and a daughter Wendy Briggs who went to America. Frank Hugh Briggs died 01 Apr 1963.|
|Anthony Hugh Briggs(406)||Son of Frank Hugh Briggs and Agnes Court, was born 10 Jun 1943 in Manchester. On 12 May 1984 he married Helen Carroll(407) and they had a daughter Louise Amelia Briggs. Anthony Hugh Briggs died on 13 Oct 1993 in Leeds, Yorks., aged only 50.|
