There was a reference in the IGI to a John Lacell (Lasell)(133) who was born around 1761 at Prittlewell, in Essex, but it seems to have disappeared, and in any case gave no information on his parents. In 1787 a John LACELL married Sarah/Sara FIRMAN/FIRMIN (134), also at Prittlewell 1. A John Lacell died in 1838, when he would heve been 67 if he was born in 1761[GRO deaths Rochford, Essex, Dec quarter 1838, vol.12, p.137]. Another John Lacell died in 1858 [GRO deaths Rochford, Essex, Dec quarter 1858, vol.4a, p.110a].

A family tree belonging to Neville Daniels has John LACELL born in 1765, the son of John LACELL (1740-1797) and Jane MARSHALL (1734-1801). It also has his marriage in 1787 to Sarah Firmin at St. Mary's, Runwell, Essex, and his death at Mrs Nelson's Bull Inn, Aldgate, in 1822, aged 57. No source details are given. The only child listed is John LACELL (1790-1820), and there are no siblings of John b.1765, no grandparents and no date for his parents' marriage. Jane Marshall's parents are William MARSHALL(d. 1779) and Alice MALDON (1712- 1756).

The baptismal records give the first names of both parents, and there are eight children listed with parents John and Sarah Lacell.

Children of John Lacell(133) and Sarah Firman(134)

Name Notes
Sarah LACELL(257) Baptised 1789 at Prittlewell, Essex, daughter of John LACELL and Sarah. [Familysearch, based on FHL microfiche 6035499]
John LACELL(258) Baptised in 1790 at Prittlewell. [Familysearch, based on FHL microfiche 6035499. There are other IGI entries, based on member submissions, which give his mother as Sarah FIRMAN and say he married Sarah BRADLEY in 1810 at Prittlewell.]
Charlotte LACELL(259) Born in 1791, of Rochford, Essex [this is a member submission, so no source details, and it seems likely that in fact she would also have beep bpatised at Prittlewell, only there is no IGI record]. On 24 Oct 1826, she married the Rev. George HARRIS(260) at Rochford, Essex [Familysearch based on a member submission] and had issue. Some descendants of Charlotte and George Harris can be seen at rootsweb. In particular one of their daughters, Mary Louisa Harris (439) married her cousin James Dick Steward(181).
Mary Ann LACELL(261) Baptised 1792 at Prittlewell, Essex, daughter of John LACELL and Sarah [Familysearch, based on FHL microfiche 6035499]. She died in infancy of smallpox?
Mary LACELL(262) Baptised 1793 at Prittlewell, Essex, daughter of Jno. LACELL and Sarah [Familysearch based on FHL microfiche 6035499]. She died in 1810?
George LACELL(263) Baptised 1794 at Prittlewell, son of John LASELL, and Sarah [Familysearch based on FHL misrofiche 6035499]. Died in infancy in 1794?
Alice LACELL(124) Baptised 1795 at Prittlewell, Essex, daughter of John LASELL, and Sarah [Familysearch based on FHL misrofiche 6035499]. Married James Steward (123) possibly on 12 Jun 1817. See her entry above.
Louisa LACEELL Baptised 1804 at Prittlewell, daughter of Jno. LASELL and Sarah [Familysearch based on FHL microfiche 6035499].

The record also has a baptism of an un-named child of John, with no mother's name given, in 1798, but there was another John Lacell, married to Susan, with children being baptised at around the same time. I also wonder about the two Marys. There is a burial record for an un-named child of John who died of smallpox in 1792, so possibly the first Mary died in infancy. Also a George Lasell died as an infant in 1794, with no parent's name given. As the only other George was baptised in 1774, it seems likely that the George who died in 1794 was the child of John and Sarah. A Mary Ann Lacell was buried in 1810, aged 17. At the moment this branch cannot be carried further back.

1) Boyd's Marriage Index, Society of Genealogists, London, via The marriage is also noted in the printed transcripts of the parish registers of St. Mary the Virgin, Prittlewell, which were published in April 1921 by John H. Burrows and Sons of Southend-on-Sea. The publication contains baptisms from 1649-1812, marriages from 1645-1812 and burials from 1645- 1812, all listed by year only. Thus the list of marriages for 1787 simply says "John Lacell and Sarah Firman, Southchurch", and this I have taken to mean that Sarah Firman was from the adjacent parish of Southchurch. Familysearch has 1787 at Prittlewell, but based on a member submission.
