This Christopher Rawdon(797) was the elder brother of my four times great-grandmother Mary Rawdon(12) (1734-1799). He was baptised on 05 Mar 1728/29 at St. Mary's Bishophill in York, only son of another Christopher Rawdon(297) and Sarah Harrison(298). He is described as being a merchant of Halifax. According to Armitage (1967) he was brought up in the trade of shalloon-maker (shalloon being a lightweight wool or worsted cloth mainly used for coat linings). The same source, quoting some notes in the City of York Library, says he became a Freeman of York in 1752.
Some time before this, on 16 Aug 1751, Christopher married Abigail Hodgson (800) at Thornton, near Bradford, Yorkshire (ICI record from Bishop's Transcripts of the registers of the C. of E. chapelry of Thornton). According to Armitage (1967) she was the daughter of John Hodgson of Bradford. The records of the North Gate End Presbyterian Church, Halifax, quoted by the IGI, contain the christenings of six of the apparently seven children of a Christopher Rawdon, and Armitage (1967), quoting Joseph Hunter's Familiae Minorum Gentium lists five.
|Christopher (Kit) Rawdon(801)||Christened on 03 Apr 1753. Married Sophia James on 01 Jul 1779 and had issue. According to Armitage (1967), his eldest son, Christopher, was born at Halifax on 13 Apr 1780, and christened on 23 Apr 1780. A brother, James, was born 02 Jan 1782 and a sister Amelia in 1788, who apparently died unmarried. Another brother Joshua was born on 22 Feb 1785. There was another sister Sophia whose date of birth is unknown. Little is known of James and Joshua.|
|Sarah Rawdon(802)||According to the IGI, based on church records, she was christened on 22 Dec 1754 at the North Gate End Presbyterian church, Halifax. She is mentioned in Armitage (1967) as having married a Mr Sage, merchant of London and Colchester. There is an IGI entry for a marriage between Sara Rawden and Edw. Sage which took place at the parish church, Halifax, on 21 Feb 1771, which is probably hers.|
|Anna Rawdon(1071)||According to the IGI, based on church records, she was christened on 24 May 1757 at the North Gate End Presbyterian church, Halifax. She is not mentioned in Armitage (1967), and nothing else is known.|
|John Hodgson Rawdon(1072)||According to the IGI based on a member submission his name is given as John Hodges Rawdon and his birth about 1750. Armitage (1967) gives the date of his christening as 13 Jul 1759, which I have taken as the correct date, but there is no indication of where this baptism took place. He is described as being of York and said to have died unmarried.|
|Alicia Rawdon(1073)||According to the IGI, based on church records, she was christened on 17 May 1761 at the North Gate End Presbyterian church, Halifax. She is mentioned in Armitage (1967) as living, unmarried, at York, in 1823.|
|William Rawdon(1074)||According to the IGI, based on church records, he was christened on 19 Jun 1763 at the North Gate End Presbyterian church, Halifax. He is not mentioned in Armitage (1967) and in view of the baptism of another child called William the following year, presumably this William died in infancy.|
|William Rawdon(803)||Christened on 05 Dec 1764. Of Fulford, near York. He died on 10 Nov 1805, aged 41 and was buried at St. Bartholemew's (?London?).|
According to Armitage (1967), this Christopher Rawdon(797) died on 28 Apr 1799, and was buried at Bilborough, Yorkshire.
In 1788 his son built Underbank Hall, in Charlestown, and there are photographs of this house on the website of the Charlestown History Group. The same website contains other information on the Rawdons.
There is much about this Christopher Rawdon(801), known as "Kit", in the paper by Armitage (1967). In 1779 he married Sophia James(804), whom Armitage (1967) describes as the daughter of a Bristol merchant. According to the IGI, based on church records (Bishop's Transcripts), the marriage took place at Westbury-on-Trym, in Gloucestershire, not far from Bristol. I do not have information on Sophia's parents, but there is an IGI reference to the christening of a Sophia James at Lewins Mead Presbyterian/Unitarian church in Bristol on 13 Jun 1756. This could well be the right Sophia, as the Rawdons were also unitarians. The parents of this Sophia were Joshua James and Elizabeth, probably Elizabeth Webb. As far as children of Christopher and Sophia go, there is mention of just three sons.
|Christopher Rawdon(208)||Born on 13 Apr 1780 and christened at the North Gate End Presbyterian Church on 30 Apr 1780 (IGI batch C085921, film 816622). He married Charlotte BRIGGS (207), his second cousin, on 23 Oct 1821 at Halifax. This, according to Alice Sophia Briggs's Diary is the Christopher Rawdon for whom my grandfather Christopher Rawdon Briggs (3) was named. A brief memoir of his life, written by Alice Sophia, is given at the back of that diary.|
|James Rawdon(806)||Born on 02 Jan 1782 and christened at the North Gate End Presbyterian Church on 10 Feb 1782 (IGI batch C085921, film 816622). He died in 1855 (GRO Deaths index Mar 1855, W. Derby, 8b, 37). He is said to have married, but I do not at present have any further information.|
|Joshua Rawdon(807)||Born on 22 Feb 1785 and christened at the North Gate End Presbyterian Church on 15 Apr 1785 (IGI batch C085921, film 816622). I know nothing more about him at present.|
