REV. WILLIAM STOWELL (1825-1878) AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Rev William Stowell

William Stowell(637) was born at North Shields on 30 Oct 1825. He was variously an independent minister, a Plymouth Brethren preacher, editor of newspapers and a journalist and finally an independent minister again. He married Mary Elizabeth Cowen(638) at Masbrough Independent Chapel, Rotherham, on 29 Nov 1848, and they had twelve children.

Frederick Stanley Stowell(649) Born in Longsight on 18 Sep 1849. A wine merchant in north London. Married Mary Jane Palmer at St. Pancras on 26 Sep 1874 and had 8 children (see separate page). Died on 2 Jun 1924 at Ealing.
Mary Stowell(650) Born 26 Jan 1853 at Boston Spa, W. R. Yorks. Birth registered in March quarter of 1853 at Tadcaster, vol.9c, p.475. According to J A Stowell (chart D-S800, 1998) she was a schoolmistress. In 1900 she married Edward Barrett Moffatt(929), and the marriage was registered at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the June quarter of that year, vol.10b, p.215. He, ten years older than she, was also a teacher, born in Hexham, Northumberland, in 1863 (GRO vol.10b, p.229), the son of John S. Moffatt, an ironmonger, and Sarah his wife. In the 1881 UK census he is described as an undergraduate of London and Durham. In the 1901 census he and Mary are living, and probably running a school, at 65 Addiscombe Road, Croydon, Surrey, he being described as schoolmaster (headmaster and proprietor). They had no issue. According to J A Stowell, Edward deserted Mary and went to Valparaiso, Chile, for 20 years. He died in a motor car accident at Windsor on 4 Jun 1928, his death being registered in that town in the June quarter of that year (vol.2c, p.516). It is not known what Mary did following his departure. She died possibly in 1919.
Rev. Arthur Knight Stowell (651) Born 30 Aug 1854 at Ware, Herts. He married Elizabeth Ann Finlinson (930) in Sep 1881 and they had five children. Died in 1932 at Leeds. For further details see his separate page.
Elizabeth Stowell(652). Born 30 Jun 1856 at Bedford. Married William James Ellsworth in 1881 and had 6 children. Elizabeth died in 1911.
William Hendry Stowell(653). Born 15 Sep 1858 at Maulden, and died there early the following year, aged just 4 moths.
Ellen Stowell(654). Born 19 Nov 1859 at Maulden. Was a missionary in Syria between 1889 and 1921, and did not marry. Died at Alexandria, Egypt on 25 Feb 1922.
William Stowell(655). Born 5 Aug 1861 at Maulden. Was a shipping agent. Married twice, firstly in 1889 to Emily Georgiana Dunn (ca.1868-1913) in 1889, with by whom he had three children. His second marriage was on 26 Nov 1914 to Ethel Anne Strachan (1884-1974), known as Nancy. There were no children of this second marriage. William died on 19 Feb 1923 at Hexham, Northumberland.
Rev. John Hilton Stowell(656). Born 6 Nov 1863 at Kentish Town, St. Pancras. Changed from Independent to Church of England. On 19 Apr 1893 he married Florence Alice Elizabeth Murrell (1869-1934) and they had four children all of whom married. John Hilton Stowell died at Sheffield on 16 Nov 1934.
Henry Stowell(657) Born 23 Apr 1865 at Kentish Town. Became melancholic. Did not pmarry. Died on 10 Nov 1875 at Gosforth, Northumberland.
Charles Cowen Stowell(658) Born 4 Mar 1867 at South Shields, Durham. Died the following year, aged 14 months.
Rev. Herbert Stowell(659) Born 4 Jun 1869 at Gateshead. Married Florence Middleton on 3 Oct 1899 at Solihull and had thee chldren two of wom married. Died at Watford, Herts. in 1941.
Adelaide Stowell(660) Born 29 May 1871. Was French Mistress and Senior Assistant Mistress at the High School for Girls, Blackburn. Did not marry. Died at Wharfdale, W.R. Yorks. on 4 Nov 1935.

The Rev. William Stowell died at Ryton on 1 Feb 1878. Obituaries appeared in the Northern Daily Express of Saturday 2nd Feb 1878, and in the Newcastle Daily Chronicle of the same date. Copies of both are in the collection of J A Stowell.
