Ann STOWELL (1797-1886)

Ann STOWELL(85) was baptised at St. Mathew's, Douglas, Isle of Man, on 25 Oct 1797 1, the daughter of Hugh STOWELL and Amelia CALLOW. She died, aged 89, on 11 Jul 1886 at Castletown, and was buried at Malew Glebe on 16 Jul 18862.

There are living descendants of Ann and William. Ann died on 11 Jul 1886, aged 89, and was buried in Malew glebe (IOM Monumental Inscriptions, vol.3)

On 07 Nov 1820, at Ballaugh, she married the Rev. William GILL(179) 3, then recently appointed chaplain of St. John's German and later, from 1830 to his death on 17 Oct 1871, Vicar of Malew.

Ann is described (Gelling 1998, p.73) as4:

..a woman of great strength of character, who was loved by everyone in the parish. She was hospitable and generous, yet managed her large family with equanimity. After her husband's death she went to live at Sandymount, Castletown, which had been built by an aunt of Gill and given to him. There she died, aged 89, on 11th July 1886, cared for by her two servants, Janet and Jane, who had been with her for 35 years. She was buried at Malew, the service being attended by the Bishop, the Archdeacon and most of the clergy.

Ann and William had five sons and four daughters, on whom I have further information sent to me by Joyce Oates and Tony Harris.

These nine children are listed in a table of descendants of the Rev Hugh STOWELL provided by Tony Harris.
