Elizabeth WEBSTER

(1809-?)

From census returns (see below), Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas HOOD(1721) and mother of Charlotte Elizabeth HOOD (1719) was born at Bath, Somerset in 1808/09. There is a record of an Elizabeth WEBSTER, daughter of James and Elizabeth WEBSTER, who was baptised at St Swithin's, Walcot, Bath, on 7 Jan 18101, so possibly born in 1809. This could be her. Also, there was a marriage at St Michael's, Bath on 13 Feb 1804 between James WEBSTER and Elizabeth LOVELL, who could be her parents. Witnesses were Wm. Gibbs LOVELL and Sarah SCOTT2. Because of the gap between 1804 and 1809 there were possibly children before Charlotte Elizabeth.

Elizabeth WEBSTER married Thomas HOOD on 27 Oct 1827 at All Souls, St Marylebone 3, so they both had moved from the west country to London. The marriage was by banns, and the witnesses were Thomas L. PARKER and Charlotte WEBSTER. Unfortunately the groom's occupation is not given, nor is there any information on the participants' parents. However, the date fits with the birth of Charlotte Elizabeth HOOD in 1829, and also suggests that there may have been other children between Charlotte Elizabeth and Sarah HOOD, born before the advent of civil registration.

I have so far found baptismal or birth records for eight possible children of Elizabeth and Thomas HOOD:

The appearance of the Webster name in the given names of two of the boys gives confidence that their mother was in fact Elizabeth WEBSTER.

I have not found the family in the 1841 census.

At the 1851 census13, Elizabeth, aged 42 and born in Bath, Somerset, was with her husband Thomas HOOD, cabinet maker, aged 47 and born in Bridport, Dorset. Also present were:

At the 186114 census, Elizabeth, aged 51, and born in Bath, Somerset, was with her husband Thomas HOOD at 38 Dorset St., St Marylebone. Also present were their two yuoungest children:

At the 187115 census, Elizabeth was aged 61 and a widow, was in the household of her son-in-law Edward DORNE at 1 Harriet Street, Chelsea. Edward, aged 40 and born in Tipperary, Ireland, was a India cloth? Merchant. Also present were:

I have not found Elizabeth in the 1881 census, which suggests that she may have died between 1871 and 1881. But I have not yet found an appropriate GRO deaths entry.
